What Does a Funeral Service Entail?

Before making the difficult decision of making funeral arrangements, we suggest that you learn as much as possible about customs, terminology, and norms so you can best select the type of services that suit your wants and needs.

Visitation

This is often called a viewing. Friends and family come to pay their respects to the deceased by viewing their prepared body and pay their condolences to the immediate surviving family members. A visitation can occur at any time before the funeral service at Bednar Funeral Home or church.

Graveside Service

A graveside service is a brief funeral service that takes place immediately before a burial at the grave. Friends and family join at the grave to place the casketed remains or Urn and memorialize the deceased. This service is usually led by clergy or a celebrant.

Funeral Reception

Most choose to host this post-service gathering at a local restaurant, social club, or the family home. This is considered a time to continue to share memories, laughter, and support. At Bednar Funeral Home we offer to every family we serve the opportunity to use our on-site reception room after a funeral or memorial service held at our facility at no additional charge. After the services, you and your guests are steps away from a space and time to continue the celebration of a life well lived. All you have to do is arrange for catering of your choice and we take care of the rest.

Funeral Service Options

Standard Traditional Burial

A standard traditional burial is a type of funeral service that most Americans are familiar with and have attended. A traditional funeral is planned all according to a family’s particular wishes as well as religious tradition and designed to honor the deceased while providing a space for loved ones to grieve and find closure. Most traditional burials involve a time of viewing the prepared body of the deceased in the evening hours or during the day of the actual burial. After the viewing time is concluded, a funeral service is held at either the funeral home, church, or other place of worship, led by a clergy person, celebrant, or family member or friend. After the funeral services conclude, the deceased is taken to their place of rest. At the cemetery, a small, brief service is held at the grave, which is the conclusion of the funeral. The combination of the viewing, funeral service, and burial is what has become the standard of a traditional funeral that can be adjusted or personalized to meet the needs of your family. We offer many options and ways to personalize a life well lived.

Green Burial

A new, quickly growing funeral option in America is what we refer to as a green burial. This environmentally conscious option focuses on returning the body to the earth in a way that avoids harmful embalming chemicals and non-biodegradable materials. The body is usually prepared in a simple burial shroud, and placed in/on a biodegradable casket or board, and placed directly in the ground. This burial method may take place in a designated "green cemetery", natural burial ground, or on your own property. If desired, a clergy member, church group, celebrant, or family member may officiate a service prior to or in conjunction with the burial.

Direct Burial w/Graveside Service

The simplest and minimal of burial options is known as the direct burial. A simple funeral rite where a decedent is held and buried in a short amount of time with a small service performed directly at the grave.
