Thomas Tucker Obituary Thomas R. Tucker, 79, of Lancaster, passed away on July 4, 2024 at his residence.
Born June 7, 1945 in Norfolk, Virginia to Marian A (Walker) and Walter Tucker Jr., he is survived by his companion:Carolyn A. Dries of Lancaster;
daughter: Adrienne Tucker of Moraga, CA; and given-children (step-children): Melanie Test, Darin Test, and
Tara Test Bueno. He is also survived by his given-grandchildren: Auryn, David, McKayla, Rael,
Joseph, Franklin, and James; his sister: Beverly Henderson, and
husband, Roger; and Brother: Walter L. Tucker, III, and wife Gail; and two nieces and two nephews.
Tom spent his early years swimming, sailing and surfing while he
honed his skills in science, history and music. His education took him
to Chapel Hill NC for his bachelor degree at University of North
Carolina and his masters in physics from William and Mary,
Williamsburg,Va. After graduation he settled into life in the science
field at Naval Research Labs, Washington, DC; Battelle, Columbus,
Ohio; and National Technology Transfer Center, in Alexandria, Va. He
loved hiking with the Sierra Club and other local groups.
Tom retired to Lancaster, Pa. after visiting the area for shape note
singing from the Sacred Harp songbook. He was instrumental in
starting a local monthly sing. Tom had been very active with the
Folklore Society of Greater Washington DC. There he found an outlet
for singing and contra dancing. Tom also enjoyed swing dancing.
Tom loved making music within several music communities in
Lancaster. Music For Everyone Community Chorus, Ukulele Uprising,
and Lancaster Rec Senior uke program, which he helped to start as a
Music For Everyone volunteer. His weekly senior lessons provided a
catalyst for sharing his love of music with many people new to playing.
Tom was always looking for others to jam with on the porch, at the
pub, or with the Folk and Fiddler Society.
In the last months of his life Tom was able to complete his pictoral
study of Lancaster retail surviving over 50 years entitled Main Street
Glory Days. Tom is remembered for his quick smile, his sharp wit, his
amazing recall, and for the love he shared with his family and friends.
A private interment will be held at Exeter Friends Meeting Cemetery,
192 Meeting House Rd, Reading, on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 4:00PM
in a green burial. A celebration of life will take place at Community
Mennonite Church of Lancaster 328 W. Orange Street Lancaster on a
date to be determined by the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Music for Everyone
